What is a femtocell?
A femtocell is a in-home 3G access point that allows you to receive a better connection on your cell phone, by using your existing hi-speed connection to transfer voice and data. Zonegate (picture above) is an example of a femtocell that uses a mobile subscriber’s xDSL connection that might include WiFi, DSL, Ethernet, phone ports and USB. What I like about femtocells are that they not only allow you to have a better connection on your calls in areas where you would normally receive bad service but it hands off seamlessly to the cellular network when you leave out of the range of a femtocell or group of femtocells with no interruption of service.
Impressions of Femtocells
T-Mobile has a in-house cellular router and they are backing the Femtocells as well. I think this is a good idea as we all know there are bad reception areas. soon we will be able to hand off to in-car routers and Cell towers so this is a step in the right direction.
