Brief Introduction to Holographic Technology
Holograph, holograms are a 3 dimensional view of an Image made with the help of lasers. The first laser is used to illuminate a photograph with its light, then a second laser bounces of the reflected light creating an interference pattern. This pattern is then captured on film, and with the aid a 3rd laser beam illuminating the developed film a 3 dimensional image of the original photograph appears.
Uses of Holographic Technology
We all know that holograms are used to display the 3d images you used to get in Cracker-jack boxes or on special baseball cards and select merchandise available in stores, but there are other uses. New technology in use allows storing of data on a optical disk which can store 100 GB of data or video on a disk the size of todays DVD’s. HDSS or Holographic Desktop Storage systems will be readily available soon and have the capabilities of storing a capacity of 1 TB with data rates of 1GB per second. Another application of holographic technology is called Tele-immersion that allows you to videoconference with other people in a way that displays a 3 dimensional view of a person and they can be sitting next to you kind of like a real Holodeck . Laser’s will project images in a virtual environment so you can even be able to shake hands or hug a person. More information on this developing technology is located here: National Tele-Immersion Initiative
Impressions of Holographic Technology
It was not to long ago we thought that the Jetsons seemed far fetch with their flying cars and Star Wars used the hologram to communicate messages to Luke Skywalker. We have this technology now, and using holographic technology is going to enrich, teach, and allow us to communicate, play, learn and develop in ways that are not possible now. Doctors can perform virtual surgeries while troops can train, as well you can visit family members and go on a walk in a virtual environment. I like the Idea of being able to download a video in 30 seconds and one more quick fact, did you know that if you cut a holographic image in half you can still view the full image on both pieces and the same if you cut it into smaller pieces as well.
