What is a Gama-Ray Burst?
Gama-Ray Bursts are the most violent and brightest explosions in the universe. Gama-Ray Burst are caused by the death of a star (Supernovae) when it explodes in an extraordinary fashion, emitting electromagnetic radiation in jet like streams that is the brightest form of light and has the most energy. (GRB’s) known as Gama-Ray Bursts are invisible to the naked eye and are hard to detect without specialized equipment to detect them on the light spectrum.
Energy of a Gama-Ray Burst
Gama-Ray Bursts are so bright astrophysicists say that they are as bright as a million trillion times as the sun and have enough energy as over a billion megatons of nuclear weapons. Most Gama-Ray bursts happen in other solar sytems and are detected about once a day, and only lethal ones strike the earth every 450 million years or so.
Types of Gama-Ray Bursts
There are two types of Gama-Ray Bursts, Short and Long.Short Gama-Ray Bursts last no longer than two seconds and Long Gama-Ray Bursts last over two to thirty seconds. Traveling at the speed of light around 186 thousand miles per second since most Bursts happen in other galaxies sometimes it takes billions of years for the light to reach us and many times the ones that were observed are from stars that exploded before are earth was formed since our earth is only 4 billion years old, a baby compared to when the universe was created 13.7 Billion Years ago.
