OK, well its not so new but it is still a concept design made by Plustech Oy a John Deere Subsidiary in Finland. This Timberjack harvester has been in design since 95 and is friendly to the environment, not tearing up hillsides like many caterpillars and other Harvesters of its kind. Check out video below:
Technology behind the Plustech Oy Harvester
The walking harvester is controlled by on board computers that maintain the balance between 3-5 legs and adjust accordingly to to the grade of the terrain. An advanced control system and one joystick navigate the machine and control its speed at normal walking distance.
Impressions of The Eco friendly Walking Harvester
In a industry that strips our land of resources its good to see John Deere continues its research to reduce the impact on our natural resources and provide ways of improving many industries including forestry in the US and abroad. This type of harvester does seem to be a bit slow to me and as it may be needs many improvements to keep its sustainability in a market where heavy equipment already dominates the field and produces more productivity output in a given amount of time. The Walking Harvester is able to turn on the spot, move sideways and get in places other Harvesters would normally not be able to get in which gives it an advantage of clearing areas better and completing jobs thereby reducing the workload and enhances the reforestation process.
